CHOICE Review

Twenty-four authors contributed to investigative studies in broadly ranged topics such as body composition and nutrition, psychological aspects of competitive athletics, training and injuries, sports and the female athlete, and social and medical issues in youth sports. The subjects were children aged 8 to 17 involved mainly in wrestling, running, swimming, and hockey. Essentially, findings required further research. Among the findings were: body composition, especially fat-free components, tend to favor competitive success; strength exercises seem to improve performance but leave concern for bone plate injury; competitive athletics delays menarche; stress affects enjoyment of sports; exercise in childhood may be a preventive against osteoporosis; competitive sports affect morals. There is no index. Many complicated statistical charts illustrate research conclusions. The bibliography is extensive. The book is unique and can be compared only to the many periodicals it is based upon, such as Research Quarterly, Journal of Sports Medicine, and Journal of Moral Education, as well as volumes on specific research listed in the bibliography. Appropriate for graduate students and upper-division undergraduates.-N. Doscher, emeritus, Brooklyn College, CUNY
