This handbook gathers into one volume the current scientific theory, clinical guidelines, and real-world interventions that can help children overcome the everyday obstacles they face. It includes a wide range of perspectives addressing the role of resilience in helping children overcome these obstacles. The book provides guidance on how to measure and evaluate resilience in clinical practice, and it emphasizes the importance of resilience - positive psychology - rather than pathologies. In addition, the book features contributions from leading experts from a variety of fields, such as psychology, education, and social work.

CHOICE Review

Resilience is a concept seemingly at odds with the usual focus of child development researchers, which is to figure out the predictor variables for successful development. Within the framework of resilience, however, the focus seems to be "look at the children who should not, by usual predictor models, have successful developmental outcomes" and explain how they manage to overcome adverse experiences in childhood. Goldstein and Brooks bring a broad range of contributions to their handbook, and that range clearly demonstrates that the field has advanced in meaningful ways. Essays in the first section, "Overview," acknowledge the need for critical examination of the concept of resilience so that it does not become a meaningless term for outcomes one finds unusual. Most significant is the chapter on measuring resilience. The second section addresses several contexts of resilience, e.g., poverty and abuse, and other sections examine the clinical implications. The editors conclude with an eloquent chapter on hopes for models of prevention. This excellent book could serve as a special-topics text for an advanced undergraduate seminar. ^BSumming Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates and above. J. F. Heberle Albright College
