A cross-referenced "index" of writings, interviews, and images representative of current architectural discourse.

INDEX Architecture documents the extensive cross-fertilization of ideas that can occur between architectural practice and education. Through work developed by students and faculty at Columbia University's School of Architecture, it offers not only an archive of avant-garde work but a record of architectural discourse at a time when the design studio has been radically altered by digital technology. Writings, interviews, and images are organized according to an alphabetical "index" of key terms. Cross-referencing allows for a rich reading of concepts currently discussed in the field.

CHOICE Review

Index Architecture is a hybrid of a highly specialized vocabulary and a portfolio of projects. The vocabulary emerged from interviews with faculty members of the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and the projects are from Columbia students. After an introduction (too brief) by eminent theorist, practitioner, and dean of faculty Tschumi, a dense chart outlines the structure of the information, from guide words, plate references, and definitions through questions and excerpted responses. Most illustrations are small, although larger-scale color illustrations are gathered in four signatures. The result is a highly theoretical, well-illustrated glossary of terms used during interviews of faculty by student Berman. Among the numerous excellent dictionaries of architecture, this may be the first attempt by a school of architecture to codify its language of discourse. It becomes, however, a view book for prospective students and would add measurably to the School of Architecture's Web site. Whether it adds to the literature of architectural theory and practice is doubtful. Architecture students will be intrigued by the analysis of student work. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
