The Printed Picture traces the changing technology of picture-making from the Renaissance to the present, focusing on the vital role of images in multiple copies. It surveys printing techniques before the invention of photography; the photographic processes that began to appear in the early 19th century; the marriage of printing and photography; and the digital inventions of our time. From woodblocks to chromolithographs, from engravings to bar codes, from daguerreotypes to colour photographs, the book succinctly examines the full range of pictorial processes. Exploring how pictures look by describing how they are made, author Richard Benson reaches fascinating and original conclusions about what pictures can mean. Although many of the techniques he discusses have been used to create exceptional works of art, Benson concentrates on the typical, everyday pictures that have played and continue to play such a prominent role in our lives. Presented as a series of one-page essays opposite the pictures they examine, the book retains the lively, engaging style of the informal lectures through which Benson developed his ideas over the course of thirty years at Yale University. Rooted in hands-on descriptions of practical techniques, The Printed Picture offers a rich and imaginative interpretation of the enormous cultural and social influence of multiple images.

"To accompany the publication of this book, an exhibition, also titled The printed picture, is presented in The Edward Steichen Photography Galleries of The Museum of Modern Art, October 2008 through spring 2009"--T.p. verso.

CHOICE Review

Benson (formerly, Yale School of Art) surveys the historic and contemporary processes used to make artistic and commercial prints. Accompanying a discussion of basic principles and techniques are wonderful reproductions illustrating printmaking principles. As might be expected, given the publisher, this book emphasizes techniques used in the last 100 years. Benson expertly reviews relief printing and intaglio, planographic, lithographic, and early photographic prints. The book's power, however, is in the chapters devoted to current practices. Authoritative explanations of processes accompany beautifully reproduced examples of modern silver gelatin photography, color photography, the letterpress halftone, collotype, and digital prints. Given that many of these modern printmaking methods are not well understood, these sections are particularly fascinating. The author's broad definition of "print" allows him to discuss an interesting variety of subjects in a historic survey of the print, including, e.g., the piano roll, the IBM Hollerith card, Polaroids, Web offset, lasers, iris color printers, and the Indigo press. Unlike most previous discussions of the topic, this book understands the print as a medium of both high and low art. Because that fundamental narrative decision is original to this volume, readers gain a new understanding of what a print can be. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
