Booklist Review

Long-range planning has been a major topic in management literature, but recently, planning strategically has gained favor. (The latest of Tom Peters' popular management books suggests that successful businesses ``thrive on chaos.'') Now Robert Schaffer, a management consultant specializing in productivity, offers the ``breakthrough strategy,'' noting that businesses and employees are most creative and productive when confronted with a specific and immediate challenge. Schaffer further argues that planning often becomes a budget- and time-consuming end unto itself. The author proposes that continuing achievement can be fueled by sustaining the zest and energy resulting from successfully meeting short-term goals. Sensible and stimulating business theory for larger public library collections. No index. DAR.
