CHOICE Review

Ben-Arieh and Miller write a fine introduction for this book that includes definitions, prevalence, prognosis, and characteristics of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The main areas of abnormal functioning are detailed fully, and specific and common examples, which are often observable behaviors, are provided. Chapters 3 and 4 are particularly strong in providing concrete examples that educators could follow and utilize in their daily routines. Chapter 4 is exemplary in the mention of the sensory issues that affect many children with ASD and are sometimes lost in the goals of the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Each chapter includes "Remember" notations that offer helpful hints or ideas to explore or consider. Included in the end of the text is a resource section, complete with forms that could be incorporated for use, and two appendixes that provide guidelines for administrators, teachers, and staff. The only weak area is in chapter 2 and concerns assessment; while a lot of information is provided, there seems to be some bias in the details. Overall, the text is readable and an excellent tool for educators in today's classroom. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduate, graduate, research, and professional collections. J. L. Young Pennsylvania State Univ.
