Library Journal Review

Allen, a master craftsman, offers this clear, concise, and profusely illustrated book on the basic techniques of joining wooden surfaces. Each joint is discussed in detail, and methods for their creation are laid out. Safety tips are discussed where appropriate. As Allen describes each joint, he relates and differentiates it from the others he has discussed and suggests when one joint might be more appropriate than another. The illustrations, both drawings and photographs, are clear and relate well to the text on the page. A solid introduction to joinery for the beginner and a good refresher for the intermediate craftsperson; recommended for most public libraries.-- Alex Hartmann, Bloomsburg Univ. Lib., Pa. Booklist Review

For starters in woodworking, this tome is to put alongside the router and the piles of accumulated sawdust. Joinery is probably the key tech~nique for quality woodworking, and anyone interested in pursuing the craft must become well versed in half-lap, dovetail, mortise-and-tenon, and the other methods used to join two pieces of wood. Although you won't find any worthwhile patterns in here, or prose that's especially riveting, the pictures and illustrations more than adequately explain these basics. In fact, anyone with a high school student around who's taking basic woodshop would do well to put this book in his/her possession, for it would make an excellent course textbook. ~--Jon Kartman
