CHOICE Review
Theoryspeak is the second volume in the "Speak" series, a companion and update to Tom Porter's Archispeak (2004). Together these books introduce 550 specialized design and theory terms culled from the last 30 years or so of architectural discourse. Since the previous volume, the editor notes a shift from critical theory toward a new pragmatism of sustainability. Concepts are complex, and definitions of a couple of paragraphs are generally effective in introducing the main points and directing readers to other sources through see references (indexed to both volumes) and "further reading" suggestions. Entries start with relevant quotations from established practitioners and dictionaries, and often include small black-and-white photos and diagrams. Definitions of loaded theoretical terms co-opted from other disciplines tend to pile jargon upon jargon. This is the place to get up to speed on terms including deontic, cosmogenic, Gaia, pet, weaving, and SuperDutch architecture, as well as ZEB (zero energy building), Deleuzianisms, difficult whole, morphogenetic design, "blobitecture," phallocentrism, and deterritorialization/reterritorialization. An excellent bibliography of design theory sources concludes the work. Though this volume is prohibitively expensive in hardback, interested libraries should definitely purchase it in paperback or as an e-book. Summing Up: Recommended.
