Library Journal Review

When her request for a new British passport was denied, Akhtar discovered the truth about her past: she is the granddaughter of an Indian maharaja and a Spanish dancer. Her grandparents' scandalous relationship was made famous upon the 2005 publication of Javier Moro's Pasion India. Ingeniously weaving together three generations-her life and the imagined lives of her mother and two grandmothers-Akhtar takes the reader on a trip through a century of history in India, the Middle East, and, finally, New York. It is a compelling story, thorough in its narration of courtly marriages, aristocratic life, and unrequited loves, and the liberties taken by the author in re-creating the lives of her characters give fresh significance to the proceedings, as readers join her in puzzling out what really happened. Chief of staff for Dan Rather at CBS from 1993 to 2006, Akhtar has been a flamenco dancer for about five years, most recently with the Spanish Manuela Carrasco Company, and spent close to a decade training as a kathak dancer in India as a child. Spanish actress Penelope Cruz has optioned the film rights. Recommended for all bookstores.-Sophie Lavoie, Univ. of New Brunswick, Fredericton (c) Copyright 2010.
