CHOICE Review

Recently, the term "broadband" has become another technology buzzword. However, accurate definition and an estimate of future use are the important issues for broadband technology. These are the primary questions addressed in The Last Mile. Wolf and Zee, who both worked for Macromedia, do an excellent job of addressing these aspects, in terms of both Internet technology and society. They discuss, with ease, the intersection of broadband, multimedia, user-interactivity, and the Internet, and they provide clear examples and case studies. Furthermore, they use the latter effectively to demonstrate the present significance of broadband. However, they do not include the most recent innovations and occurrences. Although Wolf and Zee have clearly written this book for business strategists and corporate Web developers, their concise explanations of technical terms and descriptions make it appropriate for a more general audience. For readers interested in the future of the Internet for both consumers and businesses, this book is very useful. It provides a perspective on the impact of broadband that all web developers, instructional designers, and information managers need to consider carefully.
