Booklist Review

This investigation of heroin maintains the pictorial format and straightforward discussion approach of others in Chelsea House's series of books on psychoactive substances and their effects. After tracing heroin's checkered history from medical miracle to illegal drug in general terms, Zackon looks at the production and distribution of the drug and describes some of the physical and psychological consequences of addiction (including brief mention of AIDS as a danger for intravenous drug users). The author eschews specific details of metabolism that have, on occasion, bogged down previous series volumes. He goes on to explore extant theories about addictive personalities and to consider the relationship between environment and drug dependence, rounding out the text with a particularly strong section on the kinds of therapies used in rehabilitation today. A competent general overview that avoids stridency in its anti-drug message, this can be of further value when used in tandem with materials such as Edward Dolan's International Drug Traffic (Booklist 81:1328 My 15 85). The list of further readings includes only five titles; a glossary, an index, and a state-by-state list of abuse/prevention agencies are appended. No notes. Gr. 9-12.
