Basic Biophysics for Biology presents the fundamental physical and chemical principles required to understand much of modern biology. The author has made extensive use of illustrations rather than a mathematical approach to establish connections between macroscopic-world models and submicroscopic phenomena. Topics covered include the nucleus, atomic and molecular structure, the principles of thermodynamics, free energy, catalysis, diffusion, and heat flow. Students and professionals in general biology, physiology, genetics, and radiation biology will appreciate this carefully prepared, non-mathematical volume.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

Yeargers presents explanations of biophysical phenomena by and large without invoking any math. Beginning with a very simple discussion of charges and electromagnetic radiation, the author progresses through molecular structure and ends with thermodynamics. Examples found in everyday situations are used effectively as analogies for subatomic and molecular phenomena. When the examples turn to biological situations, there are many illustrations relevant for biology students. However, familiarity with certain concepts in biology is presumed (i.e., DNA, peptide linkage, beta-pleated sheet). Additional readings suggested at the end of each chapter will provide the interested reader with material in greater depth and more rigor. Yeargers's nonmathematical treatment of biophysics presents a novel introduction to the field for students curious about basic ideas. Undergraduate. J. A. Kelly; University of Connecticut
