DescriptionA unique combination of history, biography, bibliography, and statistics, the widely acclaimed first edition of Outstanding Women Athletes has now been updated to reflect the many significant changes that have taken place in women's sports in America in recent years. Now added are the biographies of 26 sports figures who have recently emerged as role models in traditional women's sports such as tennis and figure skating as well as in sports that historically excluded women such as mountain climbing, bullfighting, and boxing. Also new is a chapter profiling 10 women's championship teams, including each organization's history, brief biographies of 200 selected team members, and major team achievements.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Library Journal Review

Now in its second edition, this resource on women athletes by historian Woolum is organized into three parts: history, biographies of individual athletes and teams, and resources/appendixes. Criteria for inclusion, new to this edition, are women who have won titles in major events and "had a significant impact on sports in America," thus allowing for the inclusion of such athletes as Monica Seles and Manon Rheaume. Excluding the index (unseen), this edition adds 125 pages to the 1992 book. The historical section not only updates the chronology but is also rewritten to be clearer and to expand information on African Americans and some sports. Twenty-six athletes have been added to the bibliographical section, for a total of 86, and the chapter on teams is entirely new and includes Olympic gold medal teams. The resources section contains lists of organizations and books by sport, while the appendixes list female winners: Olympic gold medalists through 1998, national champions, and NCAA Division I champions. Most holdover biographies have been revised and/or updated, and nearly all include books for further reading. Clearly and entertainingly written, this book successfully escapes a mind-numbing recitation of achievements. An excellent reference for students, middle school through college, that would prove useful and enjoyable for general readers as well.‘Kathryn Ruffle, Coll. of New Caledonia Lib., Prince George, BC (c) Copyright 2010. School Library Journal Review

Gr 5 Up-Woolum discusses the history of women's sports, provides overviews of athletes and teams, includes a sport-by-sport annotated bibliography, and offers appendixes full of statistics. This edition features much more information than the original (1992) and captures many of the recent advances that women have made in the sports world. In addition to 26 new biographies, the author has added a chapter on outstanding teams, including the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team, and the 1945 Rockford Peaches (the team portrayed in the movie A League of Their Own). Most of the black-and-white photographs appeared in the previous edition. There are a few shortcomings. Woolum states that Babe Zaharias "...bore the brunt of the stereotypes and prejudices many women athletes faced during this era of American women's sports," but does not elaborate on what these stereotypes and prejudices were or the impact that they had. Also, the columns are reversed in the entry on Evelyn Ashford. Encyclopedia of Women and Sport in America (Oryx, 1998) covers much of the same material. Either title would complement the sports reference section of any library.-Barb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Besides listing awards and winners of various sporting events, Woolum in a timely resource on a topic of growing interest provides historical, biographical, and bibliographical information. The historical portion is an excellent overview that summarizes the development of participation by women in American sport. An Olympic section covers inclusion of women and comments on American women in the Olympics. A biographical chapter has essays with bibliographies on 60 individuals chosen by Wollum (including such non-Americans as Olga Korbut) who have influenced or contributed to the growing presence of American women in sport. A bibliographic chapter annotates a variety of books ranging from specific sports to general sources. R. J. Condon's Great Women Athletes of the 20th Century (CH, Mar'92) contains similar biographical information but is more popular in tone. Unfortunately, bibliographies by M. L. Remley (CH, Jun'91) and Michele Shoebridge (1987), both called Women in Sport, are omitted from this otherwise useful listing. Appendixes include lists of Olympic medalists, awards, and championships, and a list of athletes by sport. Good index. Recommended for all public and academic libraries. M. C.
