Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Today, efforts are being made to rehabilitate badly degraded ecosystems and protect areas which have important ecological value, such as national parks, critical fish and wildlife habitats, natural communities and endangered species.
Since human values are an integral part of the decisions to protect or rehabilitate-the goals and objectives for such actions are often unclear. Concepts of "health," "integrity" and "diversity" express important values associated with management actions but they do not provide clear guidelines for these actions.
The criteria developed and applied in this book provide guidelines and serve as a road map to anyone involved in ecosystem management-scientists, land managers and policy makers.

Proceedings of a conference held in April 1991 at the University of Waterloo.

CHOICE Review

The current, increasing mandate to manage for ecosystem integrity makes this volume a valuable resource for many land managers and students. This collection of 11 chapters by Canadian and US experts stems from the stipulation of governmental policies and legislation to restore, protect, and preserve terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. One challenge is to define what is meant by the integrity of these complex systems, and then to choose indicators of the conditions or states that are desired. Throughout, the importance of human value judgments and socioeconomic concerns is stressed. Several chapters deal with the measuring and monitoring of ecological integrity at various scales and levels, e.g., national (Canada) and regional (Atlantic Maritime). One important chapter demonstrates the evolving management of the natural systems of the Canadian National Parks as an example of the protection of areas with important ecological value. Many useful concepts are explored concerning responses of ecosystems to stresses and changes. A timely, useful, thought-provoking reference. Graduate; faculty; professionals. D. M. Hix; Ohio State University
