CHOICE Review

An important theme in the history of education has been the need to understand schools, broadly conceived, as well as attitudes toward schooling, as parts of a much wider social, economic and cultural context. Schools, in short, reflect their societies, and further, provide a setting in which those societies are, somewhat paradoxically, both challenged and reproduced. Winzer's book is an effort to apply this fundamental concept to the history of special education, with primary focus on developments in the US from the 18th century to the present, though earlier periods and other societies are also examined. The work is a valuable addition to the literature, though it is limited by the breadth of issues, times and topics that it seeks to cover. This work should be of interest to both special educators and educational historians as a general introduction to the history of special education in the US. Recommended for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, faculty. T. Reagan; University of Connecticut
