CHOICE Review

Among British experts on American politics--like Robert Williams of the University of Durham--there is a strong tradition of publishing works that make available to students and the general public descriptive accounts of various aspects of current events in America. An adequate level of detail is seldom available in the British newspapers and magazines, so that teachers of politics must in effect give the news along with their analysis. American readers may find in this short account of the Watergate, Iran-Contra, and Whitewater scandals plus a few congressional scandals (e.g., Keating Five, Jim Wright resignation, Abscam) repetition of news they already know. In the context of teaching American politics abroad, however, what is accomplished by this approach is the creation of a source document that puts into students' hands well-organized facts that otherwise would not be available to them. Williams, as usual, is well-informed and accurate in his command of the material, and he offers an interpretation of the role of scandals in American political life that draws creatively upon his broad knowledge of the political system. Suitable for undergraduates and general readers. N. W. Polsby University of California, Berkeley
