CHOICE Review

Fredman (California State Univ.) and Wiles (financial columnist) cover not only the nuts and bolts of mutual fund operation but also mutual fund types available to investors, along with risk variation and other factors affecting returns. Four chapters cover the details of mutual fund operations, and three consider measures of risk and volatility. A separate chapter is devoted to the index fund approach to investing. Specialty approaches are also discussed, including closed-end fund discounts, sectors funds, international investing, hybrids, fixed income, tax free, money markets, and variable annuities. Information is also provided on asset management, e.g., selecting a fund family versus a fund supermarket, making sell decisions, and assessing family and tax considerations. This book is particularly useful because it considers mutual funds from the perspective of how to evaluate and invest, not just the narrow view of how funds work. Overall, the material is very detailed but easy to follow and necessary for those wanting a serious work on how to invest. All statistical information is up to date, and new chapters on recent trends have been added in this edition. This reasonably priced book is recommended for general readers and undergraduate students. E. C. Erickson California State University, Stanislaus
