Wetlands are unique and fragile environments that provide a transition between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Focusing on freshwater wetlands with emergent vegetation, this 1999 book considers productivity in relation to communities of animals and plants and their environments, mineral cycling, hydrology and management. Emphasis is given to the biological interactions and processes underlying the structure and functioning of wetlands, revealing the need to appreciate the dynamics of the system to establish appropriate management and conservation practices. Based largely on research carried out during the International Biological Programme, this unique synthesis brings together a wealth of information, hitherto widely dispersed in the literature and often difficult to locate. As such it will be an important resource for all those concerned with the ecology, management and conservation of these sensitive natural habitats.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 465-545) and index.

CHOICE Review

The editors of this book wished to synthesize information on production and production processes in freshwater wetlands gathered during the International Biological Program (IBP). Their book is organized topically with a leading chapter on the general ecology of wetlands, followed by subsequent chapters on primary production, the fate of organic matter, the role of decomposers, the role of animals, mineral economy and cycling, and microclimatic conditions and water economy. A closing chapter addresses management of wetlands. Treatment of topics, although not balanced, is thorough and extensive data are offered. However, most of the data arises primarily from research sponsored 20-30 years ago during the IBP. Thus information presented, with the exception of the chapter on the fate of organic matter, is dated. Researchers, wetland specialists, and graduate students will, however, find the book a valuable resource. W. G. Duffy; Humboldt State University
