Library Journal Review

This work represents the results of a series of in-depth studies begun in 1972 of over 500 top-level American and Canadian managers' responses to standardized risk situations. The process is so well documented that the work is valuable for this alone. The findings on managers' risk-taking responses are presented in a clear and organized fashion; among them are: that successful managers take more risks than others, that managers of small companies are more likely than those of large firms to take risks, and that more education does not result in less risk taking. The references/bibliography section is extensive. Recommended for most academic management collections. Michael D. Kathman, St. John's Univ. Lib., Col lege ville, Minn. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Risk taking or averting is a pervasive but often implicit component of decision making, yet research studies frequently probe only the final, ``choice'' stage. MacCrimmon and Wehrung innovate by also integrating the preceding stages-recognition, evaluation, and adjustment-into their study of seven aspects of behavior and attitudes of a sample of 509 executives. In the first two chapters the authors explore the essence of risk taking, survey previous research (more than 300 entries), and describe the study. Then six chapters detail the results of probing four standardized, simulated situations involving risk: ``risk in-basket'' (realistic business decisions); ``investment gambles'' (staking net wealth); ``risk-return rankings'' (investment attributes); and ``real money wagers'' (common risk components). The authors also examine three sets of actual personal circumstances: ``natural situations'' (financial and career choices); ``attitudes'' (self-ratings); and ``characteristics'' (age, education, income, wealth, etc.). Along the way, the authors summarize and collate findings, compare them with previous studies, and point to managerial implications. A final chapter takes the reader through a self-assessment (with the help of an appendix containing extensive segments of six of the seven questionnaires). Thorough and scholarly, yet accessible, fascinating, and significant. Highest recommendation for collections serving upper-division and graduate students.-J.C. Thompson, University of Connecticut
