CHOICE Review

The seven essays in this book by political scientists and anthropologists based in the US are concerned with the general theme of the centrality of cultural issues to the study of conflict and violence. Using case studies on a number of countries--Guatemala, Brazil, Israel, Iran, Egypt, South Africa, the Philippines, and Northern Ireland--the authors try to show that current crises cannot be understood without studying longer-term patterns of sociocultural, political, and economic change. Exploring the different approaches and concepts that social scientists in recent years have brought to the study of conflict and cultural meaning, the authors examine various kinds of contemporary conflicts in the divided nations: ethnic, national, and religious fundamentalist conflicts, political opposition, state guerrilla warfare, resistance to agrarian reforms, and racism. They also show how groups and individuals in a society create and reformulate their own social criticisms and understandings of conflict, thus making the point that conflict has produced culture, not just that cultural differences promote conflict. The narratives in the case studies are easier to read and understand than the theoretical analysis which at times lacks clarity and perspective. The book will largely interest research students. M.
