Projection for the Performing Arts is the definitive book on all forms of projection, whether for live theatre, ballet, TV or outdoor events. Every practitioner in all aspects of performing arts will find this book fascinating and instructional. Written in non-technical language, the book gives a brief historical overview of early projection attempts, then goes on to look at equipment and the planning and design of every kind of live performance, both inside and outdoors. Scenic projection, special effects and TV projection are covered and newer technologies such as laser scanned projections and live 3D projections are also mentioned. Case studies from many West End productions are included, together with examples of the work of American projection experts.

CHOICE Review

An informative source on the history, technology, and processes involved in projection for theatrical venues, this works deals exclusively with projection for the live performance environment. Walne devotes the entire text to essential and often elusive information necessary in the development of effective projection systems. The historical chapter reveals that despite significant technological advancement in equipment over the years, basic techniques have not changed. The chapters dealing with equipment and planning provide excellent information on developing successful projections within the strict limitations of a live performance. Walne presents highly technical information clearly and provides many useful tips and options from his professional lighting career. Readers in the US may be disappointed with the lack of information regarding equipment, manufacturers, and dealers available to them. Since no other book addresses projection theory and practice so completely, Americans will have to do some research to complete their knowledge of this aspect of theatrical projection. Theatre Crafts and Lighting Dimensions magazines are good sources of information on American equipment and dealers. Theater students at the upper-division undergraduate level and above. R. A. Naversen; Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
