The great right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto Clemente was proud of his family, his native Puerto Rico, and his ability to play baseball. "Baseball fans will welcome this book because of the fast-paced action, but the temper of the man and his concern for human beings will leave a lasting impression on the younger reader."-- The Horn Book

"Gulliver books."

School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-8 Clemente, an outstanding baseball player and a complicated man, makes a fascinating subject for a biography. The early chapters of this book, which tell of Clemente's childhood in Puerto Rico, are marred by an excess of fictionalized dialogue and oversimplification. The book improves, however, as it describes Clemente's years in the major leagues. His struggles with injuries and the prejudices of his managers and the press are told in detail. Clemente emerges, at the end of the book, from his status as baseball's most underrated ballplayer to recognition as one of the game's all-time greats. Clemente's compassion is not overlooked. He did much to help young people in his native Puerto Rico, and was on his way to assist earthquake victims in Nicaragua when he died in a plane crash in 1972. Unfortunately, the biography has no illustrations, and the drawing on the jacket looks nothing like Clemente. A helpful chart of Clemente's career statistics is included, along with a less helpful bibliography. The lack of an index is a weakness. On the whole, this is an enjoyable and informative biography of Clemente, although the description of his career as a player is better than the description of his childhood. Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. From his youth in Puerto Rico, playing on a muddy, rutted field with a knotted bunch of rags for a ball and a guava tree branch for a bat, to his superstar career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, readers come to know the achievements, motivations, and aspirations of Roberto Clemente. Walker's well-researched biography weaves statistics among family anecdotes and reconstructed conversations, making the text read quickly; only a couple of seemingly out-of-context stories fail to convey their points, and the contrived dialogue and conjectured thoughts are kept to a minimum. As a Puerto Rican black man, in the then recently integrated major leagues, Clemente had to battle bigotry, and this struggle for acceptance is made clear. The entire book's tone is adulatory, but then Roberto Clemente, by all accounts, was an extraordinary individual, driven to his baseball success as much for personal gratification as for the recognition of all Latin and black players and for the inspiration he provided for Puerto Rican youth. Clemente was also a humanitarian whose example-setting good will is documented through touching episodes and is epitomized by the story of his tragic death overseeing delivery of emergency relief cargo to 1972 earthquake vitims in Nicaragua. Though the lack of photographs is disappointing, Clemente's life as recorded here is not. EM.
