A broad-ranging introduction to the changing nature and context of industrial relations in contemporary Europe is offered in this textbook.

Through a coordinated analysis of industrial relations in specific European nations, the book gives a representative, up-to-date and dynamic understanding of the subject. Across the individual national case studies, a range of common elements is examined. These include: the differing roles of governments, business and labour as actors in the industrial relations system, and their mutual relationships; the dynamics of collective bargaining, conflict, consultation and worker participation; and the overall performance of industrial relations in economic, social and political terms.

These issues are addressed within the wider context of changes affecting industrial relations in Europe in the 1990s: European unification; the globalization of production and markets, the information revolution; the destabilization of labour markets; the fragmentation of societies in the post-industrial era; and the crisis of welfare states.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [395]-416) and index.

CHOICE Review

This work on European industrial relations is aimed at students studying international commerce. Countries covered include Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium, Italy, Spain, and aspects of central and eastern European economies, followed by a concluding chapter that concentrates on the future of business a decade after the Maastricht agreement. All chapters concentrate rather well on the differing roles of government, business, and labor; the dynamics of collective bargaining; and the overall performance of industrial relations in economic, social, and political terms. The reason for this clarity is the editorial development of similar themes. Moreover, the book's format is clear, and abundant use is made of chapter indexes and charts of all kinds. This is carried through to an appendix of statistical tables at the end that deals with population and age, GNP, imports and exports, labor force composition, unemployment rates, union density, collective bargaining coverage, labor disputes, consumer price indexes, and many other economic statistical tables for all of the countries covered. In short, a very useful and efficient book for both undergraduate and graduate students, economists, and international business professionals. R. W. Kern; University of New Mexico
