CHOICE Review

It is not often that a book appears that is so thorough, well written, and relentlessly documented as is this welcome product of recent Russian scholarship. Especially noteworthy are the qualifications of its author. Vassiliev, Pravda's Middle East correspondent for more than a decade, is a scholar whose command of Arabic and Western European languages, familiarity with vast original sources, and broad experience in Middle East affairs have enabled him to put together a first-rate history. His account encompasses the years from the emergence of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, the puritan Muslim reformer, and the rise of the first Saudi state in the mid-18th century down to 1992. Especially commendable--and fresh--is Vassiliev's thorough coverage of early Saudi history before the creation of the modern state under Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud in 1902. Beyond this, the author presents a balanced account of the economic and social revolutions of the last half century, developments that stand in sharp contrast to the dogged determination of the Saudi rulers to maintain political power over a nation that possesses the world's greatest petroleum reserves. Good maps and excellent glossary. All levels. J. W. Walt; Simpson College (IA)
