Heap is an economist (Univ. of East Anglia), as is Varoufakis (Univ. of Sydney). Both have published books on philosophical issues involved in game theory and economics (Y. Varoufakis, Rational Conflict, 1991; and S.H. Heap, Rationality in Economics, 1989). This new book introduces game theory and a critical discussion of its underlying assumptions. Unlike other books such as Martin J. Osborne and Ariel Rubinstein's A Course in Game Theory (1994) that give a mathematical treatment of game theory, this one is for a nonmathematical audience. The authors begin with material on the elements of game theory, dynamic games, and bargaining, and continue with newer material on the prisoner's dilemma and evolutionary games. Next come the results of experiments they have performed in which subjects played classic games such as the prisoner's dilemma. These experiments indicate that some of the fundamental assumptions about rational behavior made in game theory may not hold in practice. For upper-division undergraduates through faculty. B.
