Discusses current applications and new developments in separation science for the remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil. Examines waste treatment and waste avoidance technologies and the applications of separation science to waste minimization and preconcentration. Presents fundamental research for developing new technologies in the remediation of contaminated aquifers and surface and subsurface media. Offers insights into measuring the depth of problems and the effectiveness of treatment. Includes an overview chapter examining the extent of environmental abuse, the high cost of cleanup, and the federal regulations that govern cleanup and disposal of present waste.

"Developed from a symposium sponsored by the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Inc., at the 201st National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Atlanta, Georgia, April 14-19, 1991."

Includes bibliographical references and indexes.

CHOICE Review

Cost estimates for remediating the tens of thousands of hazardous waste sites in the US already exceed one trillion dollars, and even this figure is probably a serious underestimation. There is a critical need to develop new technologies to decontaminate the soil and groundwater at existing sites and also to prevent the accumulation of further wastes. This book, based on papers from a 1991 symposium, focuses primarily on the major components of the problem--heavy metals, radioisotopes, and organics--but it also includes some related topics, such as plastics recycling. The three main sections cover remediation technologies, methods of waste avoidance, and promising new methods currently under development. The introduction provides a general overview, but the papers are mainly research reports on specific treatment methods, and so are rather specialized. The information should, however, be very useful to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and experienced practitioners. H. E. Pence; SUNY College at Oneonta
