CHOICE Review

This nicely produced, affordable bibliography records 1,702 publications on the Republic of Turkey issued by or for agencies of the US government from the waning years of the Ottoman empire in 1919 up to 1986. Works cited are in the Library of Congress, government agencies, and selected research collections in the US. All are in English. The 71 subject divisions reflect changing US interests regarding the Republic of Turkey, with most emphasis on agriculture, trade, mineral resources, treaties, and Turkish foreign relations with the US, USSR, Cyprus, and Greece. US military and nonmilitary assistance programs to Turkey are particularly well represented, as is the Armenian conflict. Somewhat misleading is the section on history, which includes works produced before 1945 on a variety of subjects. Clear, detailed citations include holdings information; many have brief annotations. A thorough index and a one-page map are included. A useful record of select government research on Turkey, this also serves as a useful record of fluctuating "official" interests. For example, of 40 citations on opium poppy cultivation, most were written between 1971 and 1974, with only three written after 1976; only two studies on women were issued, both in 1985. A needed reference for students of US relations with Turkey. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level collections in political science, American history, Turkish studies, and Middle East studies. -M. Hamilton, The Ohio State University
