Library Journal Review

English-language Puerto Rican writers are too often overlooked, both in our libraries and in our curricula. This anthology should help begin to rectify that error, with fiction excerpts, short stories, and poetry by 17 contemporary Puerto Rican writers. It focuses on the past 30 years and includes not only Piri Thomas, best known for his Down These Mean Streets and representative of the Nuyorican era, but also more recent writers, such as Aurora Levins Morales and Judith Ortiz Cofer, who represent the feminizing and the cross-country spread of Puerto Rican culture. Recommended for comprehensive American literature collections and for those needing Hispanic literature in English. For another book on Hispanic writers, see Beyond the Border , reviewed in this issue, p. 82 . --Ed.-- Mary Marga ret Benson, Linfield Coll . Lib., McMinnville, Ore. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

A collection of stories, poems, and essays that explores the Puerto Rican experience in the U.S. Cultural and linguistic disjunction abound in these pieces, which give voice to the frustration the writers have experienced socially, politically, and intellectually. On the other hand, the growing vitality of a strong new literary strain is also illustrated by this anthology. Following an introduction and a medley of poems, editor Turner sketches the careers of 17 authors and provides excerpts from their writings. Although most of the authors are New York-based, their inner-city experiences of America expand into a more universal community that stretches across the sea to the whole East Coast and across the nation. Among the contributors are Piri Thomas, Miguel Pinero, and Luz Umpierre. ~--John Brosnahan
