CHOICE Review

A useful work that utilizes current experimental data and its interpretations in dealing with the structure of frontier orbitals of organic molecules. The book is organized in two parts. Part 1 deals with the methods used in the study of electronic structures of molecules: methods based on classical physics, and methods of quantum chemistry. In this section, it is shown how energies and coefficients of orbitals contribute to the understanding of organic chemistry. In Part 2 frontier orbitals of organic molecules are discussed in relation to reactivity, biological activity, and spectral characteristics. Chapters survey broad classes of organic systems: e.g., alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenohydrocarbons, oxygen and sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, and heterocyclics. Problems are included with each chapter; answers and additional data from experimental quantum chemistry and HMO calculations are given in the appendix. Graduate through professional. J. Landesberg; Adelphi University
