CHOICE Review

Twenty-three experts in the areas of corrections and/or criminal justice have contributed to this collection of essays about jails in the US. Editors Thompson and Mays have established reputations in the criminal justice area. The book proposes to identify the various problems that US jails face and also seeks to indicate who is responsible for these problems. Believing that the present jail situation is reformable, the editors make suggestions for changes and improvements in the system. One segment focuses on the internal system of jail organization and another looks at health and safety issues. A third section examines management issues and a final part looks at emerging issues and unfinished agendas. The book may be compared with Crime and Justice: A Review of Research, ed. by Michael Tonry and Norval Morris (1988) or with American Correctional Crisis ed. by Stephen D. Gottfredson and Sean McConville (1987). The book is well written and contains a very complete and up-to-date bibliography. Upper-division undergraduates and above. R. A. Carp University of Houston
