CHOICE Review

Thiher here presents an outstanding exegetic assemblage of Kafka's short fiction, particularly "In the Penal Colony," "The Metamorphosis," and "The Hunger Artist." His explanations of Kafka's posthumously published fiction helpfully clarify the distinction between the works Kafka published and those he did not publish. Helpful too is the concluding section where five respected Kafka scholars include their critical viewpoints: rhetorical, feminist, theological, Freudian, Marxist. Of interpretative value also are the selected extracts from Kafka's autobiographical writings: letters, meditations, notebooks, diaries. Thiher's recurrent theme is that Kafka's fiction is allegoric, and the alert reader should be aware of each story's symbolic complexity. Thiher also calls attention to Kafka's significant influence on all 20th-century literature, where modern man and woman are almost ignored and frequently bewildered by the sterile and impersonal technologic/technocratic structure that has overpowered today's society. Surprisingly, this study would be helpful to both beginning and advanced Kafka students. Excellent chronology, bibliography, index. -G. O. Carey, emeritus, Eastern Kentucky University
