CHOICE Review

No distillable laws of leadership exist for entrepreneurs to acquire and patent. However, this volume's 31 articles on organizational leadership embrace individual contributions by America's top management consultants, leavened by academic experts and corporate CEOs and managers. Evident drawbacks of such diverse, personal, short "takes" include Tower-of-Babel disjointedness, repetitiveness, a tendency toward generalizations, and absence of empirical evidence and operational concreteness. Nevertheless, readers will discern common themes. Future leaders--not mere routine managers--must fit the more turbulent organizational environments produced by globalization, technological change, and the ease of communication. That logic is scarcely new, but its implications are critical: leaders must allow for contingencies of circumstances, strive for the highest personal character, collaborate more and empower nominal subordinates (mixing leading and following), and inculcate cultures of flexibility and change. Still, the book's format constrains authors' attention to strategic substance and follow-through on diagnoses and exhortations. Recommended for its broad, accessible sampling of today's best professional thinking; every reader will find stimulating, resonant ideas. Upper-division undergraduate through professionals. J. C. Thompson emeritus, University of Connecticut

Booklist Review

The Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management was founded in 1990, with its mission to "help the social sector achieve excellence in performance and build responsible leadership." Hesselbein, former CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA and now head of the Drucker Foundation, and her coeditors have attracted an impressive roster of contributors. Thirty-seven notables, such as Peter Senge, Charles Handy, Rosabeth Kanter, and Stephen Covey, offer their views on leadership, examining what the organization of the future will be like and how leaders might be developed. Though they target present and potential leaders of so-called third-sector organizations, these 31 previously unpublished essays will be of definite interest to those in government and the corporate world as well. --David Rouse
