CHOICE Review

This is the second edition of a major and profound work, which focuses on the oppressive and socially limiting results of globalization. A series of essays illuminating the demise of humanitarian programs and principles of social democracies, its major focus is the decline of the nation-state and the growing domination of global capitalism. Teeple paints a dismal portrait of the impact of multinational economic forces and the near futility of resistance to this movement. Without intending to, he begins to rationalize the behavior of recent street protests at various international economic summits. This is an exceptionally well documented work without a comprehensive bibliography, but the superior chapter notes more than compensate. The author's tendency to overuse acronyms is a mild irritant but not a major problem. This work will be of great value to those studying social and economic policy, and should be required reading for social workers who are puzzled by the increasingly oppressive nature of modern society. It will also lend insight to those who are confused by the growing migration to the center by major political parties in this and other countries. Recommended for general and academic libraries. F. J. Peirce; emeritus, University of Oklahoma
