CHOICE Review
One of a series of brief encyclopedias on special subjects from this publisher, this companion to the American labor movement has many strengths but also, unfortunately, some glaring weaknesses. On the positive side, the author draws on his work on miners' struggles to produce entries on little-known heroes, villains, events, and issues particular to that industry. For library collections in Appalachia or in mining regions, this volume should therefore have strong appeal. It is much weaker as a general introduction to American labor. For example, the book includes an entry on Dudley Malone, an ACLU lawyer active in Kentucky, but omits Lee Pressman, an attorney far more important to the labor movement. Taylor's entry on the Federated Press recounts only an episode in Harlan County, and never tells what this organization was. Moreover, he is at times incorrect: e.g., his entry on the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) mentions the separate union established by West Coast radicals, but then states that by the 1950s the ILA was the only union of dockworkers, ignoring the continued existence of the other union. Not recommended. K. Fones-Wolf; West Virginia UniversityNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
