CHOICE Review

Tan Huaixiang offers here one of the most complete "how-to" treatments to date, of how costume artists can create character in their work. The author has a reputation as a brilliant stage designer and consummate artist, and here she lays out the process of creating character, a skill that she demonstrates in each of her exquisite drawings. The book includes step-by-step instructions--from the gesturing stick figure through finished character costume plates--and it points out even the subtlest and most specific nuances that give the viewer the complete picture of the individual in the rendering. The text is strategically placed around numerous examples of the techniques demonstrated, and the well-selected sketches are intertwined with ample color examples of the author's finished renderings, giving the book an almost coffee-table quality. Complete details of ethnic subtleties make this work unique, and ensure that the book will become a valuable tool for artists increasingly involved with multicultural casting. Among the examples the author includes are her wonderful plans for creating animal characters and the effort that goes into the costume work, both for flexibility in the animal character's movements and for the actor's comfort. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
