Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Unlike most statistical texts, this book breathes real life into multivariate analysis. Starting with a range of actual research examples in the social sciences, it demonstrates how to make the most appropriate choice of technique. The examples are drawn from a broad spectrum of disciplines including: sociology, psychology, economics, political science and international comparative research.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Translation of: Van problem naar analyse.

CHOICE Review

Designed for upper-division undergraduates in the social sciences, Tacq's book, a collection of relatively elementary statistical methods, is presented by way of rather elaborate examples taken from the social sciences. Students in other disciplines will find that the technical jargon used in the discussion of the examples makes it very difficult to observe what is really going on. The first three chapters, which constitute the first part, focus on the link between theory in social science and research methodology and contain few statistics. The remaining eight chapters, which constitute the second part, treat t-test, multiple regression, partial correlation and path analysis, simple analysis of variance and covariance, discriminant analysis, and canonical correlation analysis, and introduce multivariate analysis of variance. The emphasis in part 2 is on applying the statistical methods. Examples illustrate the use of a computer program to perform the calculations. Little attention is paid to examining problems critically to see if the methods are at all appropriate. General readers. F. Giesbrecht; North Carolina State University
