School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-10‘A timely series entry because of the 40th anniversary of the integration of Little Rock's Central High School. In a clear, well-detailed presentation, Tackach follows the course of the African-American civil rights struggle, from the Civil War to the present, but the focal point of this book is school segregation‘its effects, social impact, inequities, and its eventual demise. Concise summaries of the arguments, debate, and reaction to the court's unanimous decision are included and the legacy of the decision of this case is examined. This overview complements Harvey Fireside and Sarah Fuller's Brown v. Board of Education (Enslow, 1994), which gives more attention to the character and decision-making dynamics of the Supreme Court, while this volume emphasizes the before-and-after significance of the decision. Although both titles feature memorable quotes and similar anecdotes, Tackach's book offers frequent sidebars containing biographical profiles of pivotal figures, case-study information, and expanded explanations of key places and events. Libraries needing additional resources on Supreme Court decisions and civil rights issues will appreciate this open-ended discussion of the lasting effects of this landmark decision.‘Gerry Larson, Durham Magnet Center, Durham, NC (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 7^-10. Tackach presents the circumstances surrounding a historic Supreme Court case in a context that helps students understand how the Court's decision changed the legal landscape and set the stage for the civil rights movement. Beginning with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, he describes nearly a century of legal jockeying about equal rights for African Americans and how, thanks to the rise of the NAACP and the efforts of a young lawyer named Thurgood Marshall, the courts eventually began to chip away at educational injustice--first by upholding the decree for "separate but equal" schools and then by destroying it. Tackach gives a compelling account of the Brown decision, which really grew out of four separate lawsuits, and introduces numerous individuals who played a role in the historic events. Like other books in the Famous Trials series, this one is enhanced by black-and-white photos and reproductions and makes good use of sidebars to present additional background. A time line and bibliography are included. --Randy Meyer
