CHOICE Review

One Child, Two Languages, unlike earlier works (English as a Second Language: Curriculum Resource Handbook, ed. by S. Hudelson, 1993; H. Hernandez's Teaching in Multilingual Classrooms, 1997; L.T. Diaz-Rico and K.Z. Weed's The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Handbook, 1995; S.F. Peregoy and O.F. Bogle's Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL, 2nd ed., 1997; and D.E. and Y.S. Freeman's Between Worlds: Access to Second Language Acquisition, 1994), focuses on the challenges of linguistically diverse preschool children and their teachers. The text includes two parts, a description of the research study in an English-language nursery school classroom ("The Second-Language Learning Child's Task"), and practical techniques for teachers of English-language acquisition ("The Teacher's Role"). Early childhood educators of linguistically diverse preschoolers will find this a practical resource in planning curricula for young children learning English as a second language. Classroom ideas include using communication and classroom organization to support language acquisition, using the curriculum to facilitate second-language learning, working with parents, assessment, and developing effective programs. Although the book's suggestions apply to older students who are linguistically and culturally diverse, Tabors writes primarily for teachers and administrators of preschool second-language learners. Useful for undergraduates in early childhood/ESL programs. D. L. Norland; Luther College
