Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:
During recent years social scientists have come to reaffirm that understanding almost any facet of social life requires a simultaneous understanding of how economic institutions work and how they are influenced by values and norms. Sociology, and especially economic sociology, is well equipped to be of assistance in this endeavor. Neil Smelser and Richard Swedberg bring together leading sociologists, economists, and political scientists in The Handbook of Economic Sociology, the first comprehensive view of this vital and growing field.
Includes bibliographical references and indexes.

CHOICE Review
The 31 essays in this 835-page collection form the definitive compilation of recent research in economic sociology. The editors define economic sociology as differing from mainstream economics in its focus on the use of historical and comparative data to describe economic interaction. Economic sociologists see social activity as embedded in social networks, institutional structures, and culture, whereas classical economists tend to view economic actors as behaving rationally in relative social isolation. Economic sociologists trace their intellectual roots to Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Simmel, Schumpeter, and Polanyi; mainstream economists employ the lessons of Adam Smith, Ricardo, Mill, Marshall, Keynes, and Samuelson. Most of the authors in this volume are sociologists (often teaching in business departments), but also represented are several leading economists and political scientists such as Geoffrey Hodgson ("The Return of Institutional Economics"), Richard Nelson ("Evolutionary Theorizing about Economic Change"), Charles Sabel ("Learning by Monitoring: The Institutions of Economic Development"), and Alberto Martinelli ("Entrepreneurship and Management"). General surveys of the field are provided by the editors ("The Sociological Perspective on the Economy"), Paul DiMaggio ("Cultural and Economy"), and James Coleman ("A Rational Choice Perspective on Economic Sociology"). Other issues explored in this volume include religion and economic life (Robert Wuthnow); gender and the economy (Ruth Milkman); economy and the environment (Johannes Berger); welfare states (Gosta Esping-Anderson); coordination and conflict among corporations (Mark Granovetter, Mark Mizruchi, and Linda Stearns); the informal economy (Alejandro Portes); ethnic economics (Ivan Light); cross-national economic comparisons (Gary Greffi); and socialist economies (Ivan Szelenyi). A unique and invaluable survey of this rapidly developing field of scholarship. Upper-division undergraduate and graduate collections. T.H.
