CHOICE Review

A multidisciplinary volume with contributors from anthropology, ethnography, archeology, medicine, and microbiology. The contributors challenge the diagnosis of traditional iron deficiency anemia and propose identification of anemia associated with iron withholding, a protective mechanism of the body that prevents infection, and reduces risk for neoplasia and chronic disease. Iron serves as a favorable medium in the body for microbial and neoplastic cells. Other supporting evidence for this rationale is based on results of hematological analysis (hemoglobin, ferritin, and iron saturation of transferrin) and archeological bone excavations of population groups showing high incidence of anemia. Iron supplementation and fortification as an intervention approach is disputed by the editors; they recommend strengthening of the iron-withholding defense system by avoiding cultural practices that result in excess consumption of iron. Contributors address theoretical issues and present case studies. The editors provide excellent commentaries to introduce and summarize the controversial content. Well documented with references, tables, and graphs. Graduate through professional. N. S. Springer; University of Michigan
