CHOICE Review

Well organized and scholarly, this volume was in preparation for nearly a decade. It provides detailed information on the distinctive and varied musical traditions of Southeast Asia and the related cultural geography of the region. The work of a multidisciplinary panel of contributors, it surveys the rich and complex musical traditions of Southeast Asia and related cultural traditions in the arts, theater, religion, ritual, healing, and dance. The musical instruments in the regional repertoire are typically hand-crafted of bamboo, bronze, and a variety of other materials, and include many varieties of flutes, drums, clappers, reeds, zithers, chimes, gongs, and other instruments. Most of the colorful varieties of music described here (with the exception of the gamelan) are not well known outside Southeast Asia. The volume is organized on the basis of ethnology, rather than by country or alphabetically. Although imposing in size, the volume is written in a readable style that should be accessible to nonspecialist readers. The many black-and-white photographs illustrate distinctive instrument types, performers, or ensembles. The contributed entries are accompanied by a helpful glossary, a discography, and a filmography. The discography, in particular, will help readers who wish to explore the increasing number of Southeast Asian music recordings available in CD or other formats. An enclosed CD (containing 15 audio tracks) will introduce listeners to a sampling of some of the varied music of this region. This is the fourth in a projected ten-volume set that intends to cover all regions of the world. Recommended for undergraduates and above, music collections, or area collections on Asia or Southeast Asia. L. S. Dutton; Northern Illinois University

Booklist Review

The first volume in this projected 10-volume set, Africa, was reviewed in the November 15, 1997, issue of RBB. These new volumes, nine and four respectively, follow the same pattern of topical rather than alphabetical arrangement, with audio examples on accompanying compact disks.
