CHOICE Review
For those seeking practical activities that have been tested in actual high school classrooms, Stone's book is just what the teacher ordered. Written in conversational style by "award-winning teachers" in language arts, math, science, social studies, geography, visual arts, and physical education, this book does what the Internet and discipline-specific teachers' organizations fail to do: it consolidates "exemplary teaching practices" on diverse topics from various academic fields into one easy-to-read resource. Although the volume is designed for teachers, Stone (Univ. of Mass.) adds that it "could also be a resource for administrators interested in discovering what outstanding educators are doing across the country." Additionally, all levels of secondary education majors in all subjects as well as teacher educators could benefit from the sections on educational issues (community connections, teenage parents, field trips), lesson correlations to state and national standards, and "Helpful Tips." The inclusion of chapters on integrating technology into the curriculum and providing for special needs students enhances the breadth yet specificity of this volume, which could serve as a useful supplement in methods courses or for those interested in the interdisciplinary focus of writing across the curriculum.
