Written by two experienced toxicology lecturers, Principles of Toxicology is an easy-to-read, comprehensive textbook for a first course in toxicology at the undergraduate or graduate level - filling the acute need for a well-rounded introductory text. Students will no longer need to struggle with material that is too difficult or that has too narrow a toxicological focus. Principles of Toxicology covers this broad and interdisciplinary field from the viewpoint of three different functional levels: molecular and cellular; physiological; and environmental and ecological. Within each chapter, the authors combine background material with new information in a manner that stresses principles and concepts. These principles are then illustrated with selected specific examples. This design helps students focus on understanding the subject rather than simply memorizing details. Your search for the perfect introductory toxicology text is over Principles of Toxicology elegantly facilitates the teaching and learning of this challenging subject.

CHOICE Review

Stine and Brown's brief survey of toxicology will be of some use to students in allied fields wishing a first look at the action and nature of poisons. However, such readers should not expect to find depth and sophistication in the treatment offered (e.g., "ionization" is defined as the gain or loss of electrons, but exemplified by proton transfer reactions; the action of drugs and toxins is almost never explained at the molecular level). Strong features include prominent cross-indexing within the text, referring readers to allied topics treated elsewhere, and organization by organ system (rather than by chemical class of toxins, for example). Weak features abound: the intellectual level is not sophisticated, even for the intended first-course audience; the index is machine-produced and looks it, e.g., separate entries referring to the same page for "greenhouse gases" and "greenhouse effect"; chapter references rarely exceed a dozen entries, almost always to secondary sources; there are no exercises or worked-out examples, so the reader is left with a "just-so" level of understanding. Recommended without much enthusiasm for undergraduates and general readers. T. R. Blackburn American Chemical Society
