The Facts On File Dictionary of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Third Edition is an important reference tool for students, teachers, physicians, science and technical writers, and anyone looking for a concise source of current information in this fast-breaking field. This dictionary provides readers with access to the basic vocabulary of modern biotechnology and genetic engineering so that even those with an elementary knowledge of basic biology and biochemistry will be able to follow any developments in this field. This dictionary has been updated and expanded to account for the new developments and new terminology in the rapidly evolving areas of genomics, bioinformatics, cell signaling, and molecular medicine. In addition, a number of biochemical terms pertaining to recent advances in medicines for the treatment of viral diseases, mental illness, cholesterol metabolism, plant engineering, and stem cell research have been included as well. New and revised entries include: Atomic force microscopy (AFM); Epistasis; Kallmann syndrome protein; Marfan syndrome; Oncostatin M (OSM); Progeria; RAG proteins; Thromboxanes; Trimethoprim; and, Vascular endothelial growth factor.

Includes index.

CHOICE Review

The third edition of this dictionary continues to require more than a basic knowledge of biochemistry and genetic research. Significant new terminology is included in the evolving areas of genomics, bioinformatics, cell signaling, molecular medicine, treatment of viral diseases, and stem cell research. Most definitions are brief, a few sentences in length. Technical and scientific terms and phrases used in the definitions generally have their own entries, offering some assistance for nonspecialists. Illustrations and diagrams, judiciously provided, are effective in promoting understanding of a concept or structure. Written by Steinberg (CUNY; posthumously by Cosloy) the dictionary is oriented toward application of techniques, structures, and data rather than being an exhaustive elucidation of genetic science/technologies. Appendixes include a list of acronyms, a simple chart of the genetic code, molecular structures of purine and pyrimidine bases in nucleic acids, side chains of individual amino acids, a listing of enzymes and their activity/applications in gene cloning, and significant bioinformatics Web sites--including gene/protein sequence databases. This third edition is useful for undergraduate and research libraries as a concise resource for applied genetics, but it cannot replace more extensive compilations such as Robert C. King, William D. Stansfield, and Pamela K. Mulligan's A Dictionary of Genetics (7th ed., 2006; 6th ed., CH, Apr'03, 40-4355). Some nonresearch libraries can rely on the online Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms , produced by the National Human Genome Research Institute. It covers only about a fourth of the number of terms in Facts on File's dictionary, but it provides similar definitions, audio information, excellent graphic images, and links to related terms, and it has the advantage of being easily updated. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above. J. A. Adams-Volpe University at Buffalo, SUNY
