Reasonable accommodation is defined as any change in the work environment or in the way business is usually conducted that results in equal employment opportunity for an individual with a disability. With the Americans with Disabilities Act in full swing and more than 35,000 court cases on record, there is much to be done to get most companies into compliance.
Reasonable Accommodation: Profitable Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act was designed to provide those responsible for diversity and implementing the ADA with specific benchmark examples of how companies have provided accommodations that have had a positive impact on profitability, quality, employee and customer relations.
This masterfully written book covers many important topics dealing directly with the ADA. It also provides numerous technologies available that can greatly increase productivity and quality of performance for disabled employees, as well as a "who's who" of case studies including: AT&T, Boeing, Federal Express, Ford Motor Co., Bank of America, Digital Equipment, General Electric Co., IBM, Motorola, WAUSAU Insurance Co., Sears Roebuck, Philip Morris, and many more.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Case studies: companies -- Case studies: rehabilitation organizations -- Managing AIDS in the workplace -- Access technologies -- ADA in action: supervisor's guide -- Sources for disability awareness information.

CHOICE Review

Spechler tells the stories of 26 major companies (including such diverse employers as AT&T, Federal Express, Florida Power and Light, and Sears, Roebuck) and how they have complied with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Additionally, Spechler discusses joint programs between industry and rehabilitation organizations for training and employing those with differing abilities, and he provides information about available products and techniques for making workplace adaptations. The author includes sample corporate policy statements and human resource documentation on issues such as conducting interviews within the scope of the ADA and managing AIDS in the workplace. This book's greatest strength is as a reference; the author carefully documents his sources of information and specifies additional sources of information. This documentation will be especially useful for human resource students and professionals. Recommended for academic and corporate libraries. N. Lasher Trenton State College
