School Library Journal Review
Gr 9 Up-A carefully researched, well-written book. Spangenburg and Moser trace the development of science and the scientific method from ancient times to the 1600s through biographical sketches of famous researchers in physics, astronomy, medicine, and biology. The brief portraits are infused with a sense of the times, detailing each era's social and intellectual struggles. The authors clearly delineate what historians know about the scientists, separating fact from legend. As a result, readers gain a real sense of what made their advances revolutionary and the characters of the individuals who pushed science forward. Good-quality black-and-white reproductions, drawings, and photographs re-creating laboratories and equipment of the time are included. The historical diagrams are more decorative than explanatory. This is an excellent addition to library collections, especially for those students with some background knowledge of science.- Alan Newman, American Chemical Society, Washington, DC (c) Copyright 2010.
