nbsp; Caribbean Dance from Abakuá to Zouk is an unprecedented overview of the dances from each of this region's major islands and the complex, fused, and layered cultures that gave birth to them. The authors in this collection, from distinguished cultural leaders to highly innovative choreographers, reveal how dance shapes personal, communal, and national identity. They also show how Caribbean rhythms, dances, fragments of movement, and even attitudes toward movement reach beyond the islands and through the extensive West Indian diaspora communities in North America, Latin America, and Europe to be embraced by the world at large. From the anthropological to the literary and from the practical to the creative, these dances are explored in the contexts of social history, tradition, ritual, and performance. Connections are made among a fascinating array of dances, both familiar and little known, from culturally based to newly created performance pieces. Particular emphasis is placed on the African contribution in making Caribbean dance distinctive. An extensive glossary of terms and more than 30 illustrations round out the book to make it the most complete resource on Caribbean dance available. nbsp;

CHOICE Review

Sloat's collection of 22 impressive essays by distinguished contributors (ranging from professionals to scholars of dance and cultural studies) emphasizes how African elements set Caribbean dance apart. Treating subjects as wide-ranging as music, indigenous and stage performance, ritual and language, and societal and cultural histories, this valuable sourcebook sheds light on the forging of identity within contexts that are often troubled. Topics include traditions found throughout the Caribbean, including the "Afro-Euro-Caribbean triangle," and "United States-Caribbean connections" (in regard to the last, Ramon Rivera-Servera considers postmodern performance artist Josefina Baez, a Dominican living in New York City; Alma Concepcion's "Dance in Puerto Rico: Embodied Meanings" examines the New York 1970s salsa phenomenon and other popular rhythms as examples of new forms resulting from the "Caribbean-Latino population in diaspora"). Whether on the islands or in diaspora, the vast array of dance forms presented here have impacted Caribbean societies, and this book shows their role in community and national identity formation. Useful photographs, glossary, bibliography, and index. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, and professionals interested in cultural studies and world theater. E. C. Ramirez St. Philip's College
