Library Journal Review

College administrators, the National Collegiate Athletic Association's executive director, coaches, journalists, athletic directors, and a director of the National Football League Players Assocation evaluate thorny issues facing sports in general and college athletics in particular: drugs, discrimination, naive administrators, and recruiting violations. Though seemingly viable ways to modify institutions and practices are discussed, big-time sports may continue spawning unethical behavior as long as greed consumes this nation. Publishers Weekly Review

Considering the alleged absence of morality in sports today, it seems encouraging that Lapchick, director of Boston's Center for Study of Sport in Society, and Slaughter, president of Occidental College, have assembled a 214-page report of this oxymoronic subject. They solicited notables Bob Woolf (sports agent), Jack Bicknell (Boston College football coach), Doug Single (athletic director at SMU), Richard D. Shultz (president of the NCAA) among others to define problems plaguing collegiate sports. While the range of discussion is impressive, depth is seriously lacking. Simplistically, the majority of the ``experts'' here contend that college athletics would be freer from sin if ``good people'' were hired. Only Woolf's essay on agents and sports editor Sandy Padwe's commentary on the media suggest that the infrastructure of collegiate sports might be at fault. ( Nov.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. CHOICE Review

This book takes a consummate look at intercollegiate athletics, defines many of the problems, and offers some sound, workable solutions to try to put college sport in its proper place in US higher education. Former athletes and their agents, coaches, college presidents, athletic directors, journalists, and administrators have all contributed to the success of this superlative volume. Editors Lapchick and Slaughter are two experts who know how to deal with the crisis in ethical issues that faces the student athletes in the US today; they have the expertise to put programs in place and to make changes that are very positive. The documentation of sources is exceptionally well done. This thoroughly readable book is highly recommended for any type of academic library. -H. F. Kenny Jr., Wesleyan University
