This comprehensive Handbook, the first in a decade, provides an intensive review, integration, and evaluation of the first quarter-century of health psychology research and intervention. Because of research advances in behavioral, psychological, and social aspects of health, health psychology has created a new way of thinking about health and well-being. Working within biobehavioral and sociocultural frameworks, the 51 chapters address basic theories underlying health-behavior relationships while, at the same time, applying those theories to specific disease conditions and the promotion of health.

This book is intended for teachers of undergraduate, graduate or professional courses, students in psychology and other applied health fields, health researchers, and health practitioners.

Includes bibliographical references and indexes.

CHOICE Review

Health psychology's growth over the past 20 years has been fast, furious, and extremely productive. Nonetheless, a brief pause is necessary to record what scholars know and what they still need to learn about biological, social, and psychological factors affecting health, well-being, disease risk, and mortality. This monumental summary of research achievements features 51 chapters written in generally crisp prose, up-to-date citations, and contributors who are major researchers working in health psychology and related areas. The handbook has three main sections: basic processes (e.g., factors influencing behavior and behavior change, personality, and illness), cross-cutting issues (e.g., stress, aging), and the study of disease (the coverage of cancer and HIV/AIDS is particularly detailed, with four chapters on each topic). The concluding chapter looks to the future by examining issues of cultural diversity and health. Reference libraries will certainly want a copy of this milestone work, since students at all levels will benefit from consulting it. Researchers, instructors, and graduate students in health psychology and related fields will find it an excellent resource. D. S. Dunn Moravian College
