Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and Vergil's Aeneid not only make up the core of ancient Greek and Roman literature but also serve as the centerpiece of the classical tradition upon which Westen culture is based. This bibliography is directed toward the first-time reader of the classical epics in English translation. The annotations are designed to help the high school and college student find a path through the material written about Homer and Virgil.

Includes index.

CHOICE Review

An annotated, retrospective bibliography listing selected source materials on the classical epics--Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and Vergil's Aeneid--from the early 1900s to the mid-1980s. This work lists book titles as well as essays and pertinent chapters within books. It does not list articles in periodicals. The work is convenient for beginning students of the epics and the epic tradition as it includes many introductory "classics" in this field of scholarship such as Thomas Day Seymour's Life in the Homeric Age (1908) and Walter C. Perry's Women of Homer (1898) as well as the more recent, e.g., Michael N. Nagler's Spontaneity and Tradition: A Study in the Oral Art of Homer (CH, Sep'75). The bibliography lists materials on the general historical background of the societies that produced these epics as well as biographies, text and plot summaries, literary and character studies, and individual studies of certain episodes and passages. Sources pertaining to the later influence of Homer and Vergil are also included. Even though this volume in the "Magill Bibliographies Series" is not a current bibliography, it is disappointing that Robert Fagles's new translation of Homer's Iliad (1990) was not mentioned or included. Author index only. Recommended for undergraduate programs in the humanities. -J. C. Jurgens, Northeastern Illinois University
